Passion, Lifestyle, Flexibility!
I can’t remember exactly when I started thinking of a career change, but I remember the frustrations of a thankless job and the more I thought about a career change, the more appealing it became.
While working in the field of education used to be something I enjoyed immensely, it’s becoming a bit of a chore and a bit more demanding, in more ways than one.
Even though I enjoy a level of flexibility that most people may not have at their disposal as far having a job goes, that flexibility sometimes wanes when you consider the other demands of the job. In addition, having to engage with students who say they want to study a particular field but they show show absolutely no interest in the process of getting there, is not at all motivating.
I have no idea how people teach for twenty and thirty years. All power to you if that’s what you do, or you’ve done! However, for me, sometimes the committee meetings and curriculum review and development that battle for attention in addition to uninterested and under-performing students, can definitely take a toll.

While I can shy away from committee demands and a few other “obligations” the problem of uninterested and under-performing students who think and behave as if they are subject matter experts, can really be challenging at times.
One would think that as a student enrolling in a College that this student is there to get himself/herself educated by learning new information. Well, at least that’s what I would think. However, some of them seem to think that they don’t need to engage in the process and as a result they perform poorly.
For some of them, they can’t really accept that they don’t know the material as well as they thought they did and the prevailing attitude seems to be that they already know it all. In that respect, they want to tell you how to grade their papers.
Hello, buy a vowel and get a clue, why don’t you. The fact that you did poorly on an assessment suggests that you don’t know the material as well as you thought you did. However, that fact does not register with them at all.
I think they get confused and think that it’s okay to apply their general knowledge with reference to answering a question, when they are being asked to apply theoretical knowledge concerning the topic. To them the application of general knowledge makes sense. Therefore, being armed with such knowledge, they want to tell you how to grade the “masterpieces” they hand in.
The sad part about that is that they see absolutely nothing wrong with that idea. Clearly, they did not enroll in College to get an education but rather to show what they already know the information. If a College education was that easily attained, then why would we have to go through the hassle of attending classes and paying all that money for it?
Just give us that diploma, since we already know so much.
If only it worked that way, think about how much money many of us would have saved getting that college education! Then think about how much we would have known related to our chosen profession. Not much at all!
Think about the doctor who merely got a piece of paper saying he was qualified simply because he thought he knew all the information. Could you imagine?

You try your best to explain it to them but it seems like the information goes in one ear and comes out the next. You make every effort to explain assignments, how to go about it, but most times, that effort just comes to naught, as they hand in something that you know they did not spend much time thinking about.
Some of them feel that because they wrote so much on the topic that they should get more marks just for that, even though the content is inappropriate and does not even begin to address the topic at hand.
Then there are some who make up their own theories and of course they too also have an expectation of fantastic marks.
Worst yet, some of them want to make it so easy on themselves, and they take the lazy way out and simply copy and paste information. Thank God they are in the minority but they still don’t get that they are doing themselves a disservice when they do that.
What is also alarming is that the students, who don’t know anything but consider themselves subject matter experts, get very defensive when they get back their creative masterpieces. Since, they know everything; the lecturer who has been educated and trained, is the one who has no idea how to grade their “works of genius.” This sounds hilarious but it’s all very real.
Most of them seldom take responsibility for what they wrote, and in an effort to protect their egos and their self-esteem, defense mechanisms come out in spades, so they find someone else to blame for the rubbish, oops “masterpiece” that they wrote.
Of course the best person to assign blame to is the lecturer, since the lecturer wrote their paper. Go figure.
To them, blaming someone else makes sense, since it most likely helps them deal with that anxiety they are experiencing as a result of their “failure.” However, what they don’t realize is that using such a strategy is self-deceptive, as they are not really dealing with the real issue at hand; the fact that they don’t know the material as well as they thought they did.
I have to admit that it’s not all mire, since there are some students who are smart enough to take ownership for what they did and take stock of their mistakes so that they can perform better on future assignments. However, it gets pretty frustrating when you’ve invested the time and energy and it seems like it was all for nothing.
I keep telling myself that maybe they’ll get it eventually; it might not be with me, but maybe at some point something I said would jolt them out of that self-deluding fantasy that they’re in and they’ll take their education seriously. Am I hoping for too much? I hope not.
So in the mean time, while I come up with new strategies to try and motivate some of my students to tap into their potential, having a work at home business is my way of escape. It allows me to focus otherwise, while I do something more enjoyable.
In addition, it’s something I can grow which can eventually replace the daily grind that I face right now.
Other equally cool aspects to having my work at home business are:
- I still get to educate people even though it’s on a different aspect,
- My market is online and wider than the students in my classroom.
- It provides a level of flexibility, so that I can work at it at my convenience,
- There are no committee meetings, and
- I get an opportunity to interact with people who are actually interested in what they are doing.
Having that opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals provides a level of comfort since we’re all working towards the same thing; building an online business. No disinterested students to deal with here and having access to leading industry experts is motivating as well, since we all get that help and support to make our online business a success.
