Better.com CEO fired 900 employees in a Zoom call. Damn…, imagine being fired on a ZOOM call! Unbelievable, but with COVID-19 on the scene, that’s the new normal. Not being fired per say but communicating virtually with others.
Added to that, having to restructure some things because of the Coronavirus, has resulted in more efficiency for some companies. So it’s understandable that there may be a need to let some people go.

But seriously being fired via Zoom with immediate effect! I cannot fathom the shock that those employees must have gone through.
Who fired 900 employees over Zoom?
Vishal Garg, CEO of Better.com which is a digital mortgage company did the mass firing via a three (3) minute Zoom call. Within that three minutes, 900 Better.com employees were terminated with immediate effect.
Well, talk about mass firing made simple. You have to admit it’s an efficient way to fire a lot of people all at once. But on the flip side, it sucks. It speaks volumes as to how much he really cares about his employees. Then again, there’s that internet mindset; everything in an instant.
But due to the backlash, he did apologize and admitted he handled things poorly. According to Garg, “I failed to show the appropriate amount of respect and appreciation for the individuals who were affected, and for their contributions to Better. I realize that the way I communicated the news made a difficult situation worse.”
Hindsight is always 20-20.
Now according to The Verge, he is taking time off, as “the board of directors reportedly said the company is conducting a leadership assessment.” Oops.
“As first reported by Motherboard, the board’s email says following “the very regrettable events over the last week,” CEO Vishal Garg will be taking time off “effective immediately,” and Better CFO Kevin Ryan will manage day-to-day operations.”

I hope he is not on the receiving end of what he put others through. But these days, you just never know, anything can happen.

There is a Bright Side
But hey, you know what, there are worse things than being fired. As long as you have health and strength, you can make money. And according to CNBC, there are more job openings than people looking for work. So to those fired, there are opportunities out there. You just need to find one that suits you. And since there are more jobs than people looking, finding a new job should be an easy task.
It’s also a good time to focus on a side hustle while you are looking, as opposed to jus staying at home and doing nothing, while you look for a new job. Side hustles often turn into lucrative business. So in the mean time, find that thing you’ve always wanted to do, and do it!
Now is a great time to put your expertise at work for you. Lots of qualified people are opting to work from home doing what they want to do, as opposed too working for someone else again. And there are lots of opportunities online that can help you do exactly that; opportunities that can make full use of your talents.
