Job performance appraisal methods come in all shapes and sizes, and some include an option for employee self-evaluation performance review. But even so, try as I might, I know I’ll never get a perfect performance appraisal with my current job.
If you’ve even gotten one, then kudos to you. I’ve come close but no cigar, not that I smoke.
Let’s just set the background shall we? First of all I work in the field of education, more specifically, in the classroom, so the feedback comes not just from myself, but from my students and the head of my department. While it sounds fairly comprehensive, the process is a subjective one.
So why do I think I’ll never get the perfect job performance appraisal?
Simple, really. One of the performance appraisal factors relate to attending college events, whether I am interested in these events or not. So I attend some of them but not all. Sounds pretty reasonable right, since my life should not revolve around my job. But that’s just my opinion, as that’s not how it really is.

Some Students’ Ratings Really Suck!
The second factor has to do with being evaluated by students who are not entirely invested in their education and who seem to have no clue regarding their responsibility towards getting an education and good grades.
So if they are failing the course, even though they have access to chapter notes, sample questions, and a host of other resources, their interpretation more often than not, is that the lecturer is “failing” them. Under those circumstances, my evaluation will always take a nose dive.
Here are two other instances that relate to the above factor.
One of the appraisal components relate to class punctuality; me arriving on time for class. If a student is tardy in relation to class arrival and attendance, then he or she has no idea whether or not I was punctual. The possibility exists, that the student would use his/her personal experience, as a possible measuring stick to rate my punctuality.
In addition, If they come to consult with me outside of my office hours and they don’t find me, bet your bottom dollar my rating for “accessibility” would take a hit.
Yet another reason why I won’t get a prefect appraisal, is the fact that one of the evaluation components relate to attaining further education and since I have not started on a PhD… well you get the basic idea. I won’t get perfect marks there either. While I do upgrade my skills with relevant training, that alone won’t do the trick.
To me, investing in a PhD is a personal matter, since it involves a commitment of time and money. Granted the compensation level is higher, however, at this juncture in my life, I am simply not interested in pursuing that avenue at the moment. Honestly speaking, I am not sure that I would pursue that avenue but, hey, who knows.

Job Security Is a Thing Of The Past!
Finally, last but by no means least, why I’ll never get that perfect evaluation, is… drum roll… the fact that “there is always room for improvement”. I am sure you’ve heard this statement at one time or another. As such, while I would get that perfect 5 out of 5, there would always be the “4.5 or the 4 out of 5” somewhere in there, even though I might think that I doing a perfect job in a specific area.
You might think that the fact that I do have the opportunity to self-evaluate, that I give myself perfect scores, but believe it or not, I don’t. In some areas I am very consistent and then there are some areas that I think I still need to improve on.
Given the circumstances, and knowing that I won’t get a perfect job performance appraisal, is actually okay with me, as I don’t see myself being so self-sacrificing to any one organization. Job security is a thing of the past, and it’s more important for me to live my life the way I want to, as opposed to what an organization might want to dictate to me. Don’t you agree?
That’s one of the reasons why I started a work at home business. I do not subscribe to the approach that someone’s life should revolve around their job or the organization for which they work. If you want to do that, then that’s your choice. But if you are working that hard, it might as well be for yourself. So why not start your own legitimate work at home business?
Just remember, we are after all human beings and can easily be replaced. My thing is, do your job and do it well, but also live life to the fullest, while you are still able to. Having an online business can allow you do just that in time to come. As much as possible, try and enjoy the time you’ve been given. The less regrets the better.
Hey, I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject so why not take a few minutes and share your experiences in the comments section. Looking forward to hearing from you.
